This Privacy Policy is designed to help you better understand how we gather, use, share and store personal information, and discloses the general privacy practices for Social Shifters (and all Social Shifters services) with regards to past, current and incoming users.
For the purposes of this Privacy Policy, (‘the Sites’) will be used in reference to both Social Shifters central web properties – socialshifters.co or challenge.socialshifters.co. Discussion forums and all content, information and services hosted on the Sites, and enrollment on either the Social Shifters platform OR the Global Innovation Challenge platform, are collectively called the ‘Services.’
Please note that this Privacy Policy applies only to Social Shifters products and services, and not necessarily to other third-party companies, webSites, or platforms.
Social Shifters is operated in support of its mission to provide unique personal and professional development opportunities to young people, using social entrepreneurship as a vehicle.
The type of personal information we collect
To provide the Services of Social Shifters, we may collect and store information that you disclose to us with your consent. For example, we collect information from you when you sign up to the Sites or register to use Social Shifters Services; and when you contact us by email, over the telephone or in-person, or in response to a survey or promotion. The information we collect may include, but is not limited to, your first name, age, contact information such as email address, nationality, your place of education, and learning goals or preferences.
If submitting an application to a competition you may be asked to provide contextual information about your idea or project, and related work you have undertaken. You may also be asked to provide the names and email addresses of other team members.
When you disclose to us any personal information, we collect details on when consent was given, and what use of personal data was permitted by you.
We can use your IP address to help diagnose problems and administer improvements on our online platform and community, including but not limited to identifying your usage of Services and Sites and the aggregate geographic location of our international network of users. This means that user sessions will be tracked.
How we store your personal information
We will only retain your personal data for as long as needed for the purposes set out in this document, and/or required by law.
In general, this means that we will only hold your personal data for a minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 5 years.
Social Shifters Privacy Policy offers end-to-end lifecycle protection of your information, by engaging in proper data minimization, retention and deletion processes.
After a maximum of 5 years of storing your information Social Shifters will notify you that your consent is nearing expiration, and will send you a series of communications to renew your consent. If you don’t re-opt in within the requested time frame, Social Shifters will unsubscribe or delete your personal data.
Social Shifters systems automatically delete the data of users who have closed their accounts, unsubscribed from our services or have requested the deletion of their data.
Social Shifters stores all your information securely on our servers located in Toronto, Canada, our CRM platform, ‘Active Campaign’ and our Challenge platform hosted by ‘Skild’.
Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the lawful bases we rely on for processing this information are:
- Your consent. You are able to remove your consent at any time. You can do this by contacting our named contact at the beginning of this notice OR by using account deletion function within our platforms OR via the unsubscribe links on our marketing communications.
What are cookies and how do we use them?
Cookies are small files that are stored on your computer. Cookies allow webSites to remember information about a user, such as a user’s preferences when visiting the webSites.
We use cookies to understand and save your preferences and compile aggregate data about Sites traffic and interactions to improve your future user experiences. As with most webSites, Social Shifters, by itself and through third-party services, uses cookies to evaluate use of our Sites and improve our Services.
Since the cookie policies of third-party Sites change over time, you should determine their policies by visiting the privacy policy pages of these Sites directly.
You may disable Google Analytics cookies through your individual browser options.
Information collected through your use of the services

Only with your consent, we collect personal information provided by you, including when you sign up to our Sites or Services.
This does not include information publicly available in an individual’s capacity as an employee or official of an organization, including information for business relations.

Third party access to information is limited to their specific purpose of use. They are prohibited from using or sharing your information for any purpose other than providing the outlined services to Shifters Shifters and the Sites.
We do not sell, swap, or authorize commercial use of your personal information to any third party.
We may disclose your information to additional third parties in circumstances where we reasonably believe it to be necessary or appropriate, including to: respond to a governmental request; detect, prevent or otherwise address fraud, resolve security or technical issues; or safeguard the rights, property or safety of us, our users or others.
We may share information with any successor to all or part of our business. For example, if part of our business is sold we may give our customer list as part of that transaction.
We will share your data if we are required to do so by law or to protect ourselves – for example, by court order, or to prevent fraud or other crime;
We may share your information for reasons not described in this policy. We will tell you before we do this.
Social Shifters may use your personal information for the following purposes:
- To respond to and track inquiries and customer service requests;
- To provide you the Services and WebSites features,
- To maintain and improve the Services and the Sites;
- To prevent fraud;
- To email or contact you regarding Social Shifters services, solicitations related to our work, our newsletters, events, and promotions and special offers from us and our partners;
- To manage your account and account access;
- To provide you with purchase confirmations.
Your data protection rights
Access to your Information
You may access the information you provided at any time. If we cannot provide you with full access to your information, we will advise of what we are not granting and the reasons for limited access.
You can modify information you have given us. If we cannot make the changes you want, we will let you know and explain why.
You can opt out of receiving our marketing emails. You may unsubscribe from e-mail lists at anytime at the bottom of all our marketing emails. If you choose to withdraw consent, we will advise you of the effect.
Even if you opt out of getting marketing emails, we will still be sure to send you transactional messages. For example, we may still contact you about your subscription, fees or payments.
If you contact us requesting access to your information, we will respond within 30 days.

You are not required to pay any charge for exercising your rights. If you make a request, we have one month to respond to you.

Information protection
We care about the security of your personal data and make all reasonable efforts to maintain the security of your personal information. You should be aware, however, that the web is inherently insecure. No method of transmission over the Internet, or method of electronic storage, is 100% secure and that unauthorized third parties may unlawfully intercept or access private data. As such, You provide us with this information at your own risk. Social Shifters accepts no liability for the security or privacy of personal information in transit over the Internet.
International data transfers
Social Shifters offers its Services in a variety of countries around the world. If you are in a region with laws governing data collection and use which differ from those of our primary operational regions (the UK or Canada) please note that your information, including your personal information, may be transferred to countries located outside the EEA, and those countries may not have the same level of protection as the country in which you initially provided that information. When we transfer your personal information we will protect it as described in this Privacy Policy.
Changes to this policy
We may change this privacy policy. In that case, the ‘last updated’ date at the top of this page will also change. Any changes to this privacy policy will apply to you and your data immediately.
If these changes affect how your personal data is processed, Social Shifters will take reasonable steps to let you know.
